Before we can meet a god or perform a rite, we need to understand the world the Egyptians actually inhabited, because it is a different world from the one modern habit hands us. Here we take up the neteru and what it means to call something divine. We take up the ka and the ba, those parts of us that the tradition names and works with. And we take up Ma'at, the law that holds the world upright, which is at once justice, truth, balance and the right ordering of things.Most of all, this book teaches the temple itself as a living structure. Once you see how an Egyptian temple was designed to be entered, the whole tradition begins to make a different kind of sense. This is the doorway. Osiris and Isis, Nephthys, Anubis, Thoth, Sekhmet and the wider company are met here not as figures in a story but as they are met in the work: as presences one approaches with care.There is a real difference between reading about a god and standing in contact with one, and this book is concerned entirely with the second. How do we approach a power of this order? How do we hold the contact once it is made, and, just as importantly, how do we close it cleanly and return to ourselves? These are not questions the picture books ask, because the picture books are not expecting you to knock on the door. We are. We take up the four Quarters and the Officers who hold them, the Stations of a working, and the whole shape of an opening and a closing.A word here about what this book does not contain. You will find no ritual scripts in it, and this is deliberate. A script is a dangerous thing to hand a reader, because it only functions safely inside a working temple, with trained people standing in it who know how to open a rite and, far more importantly, how to close one. So we teach ritual differently. We teach it by shape and by meaning, so that the reader understands what a rite is for and how its parts serve one another, and is properly prepared should they one day stand in a temple where such work is done.
